You Are Exactly Where You Need To Be

As part of the Sisyphus Office show that artist Jonn Herschend curated in Houston, Assistant Curator Susan O’Malley (that’s me, by the way) has been working with the lovely people at copy.com to make changes to their front windows.

Almost everyday I’ve been sending Matt (an awesome employee at copy.com) an inspirational poster file over email. Matt prints, hangs and snaps a photo of the posters.  Soon the entire window will be filled.  This is what is looks like to-date.

What has been really inspiring about this project is to know that there are practical strangers across this country willing  to devote time and resources to work with aritsts and cultural producers. At this particular moment in our world, when the problems are so large and daunting, art  matters. It matters because it creates meaning, allows the opportunity for reflection and it can also be really fun.  That is truly inspiring.

Thank you Matt and Steve and copy.com!!

Tshirts: $20 | Tshirt Catalogue Modeling Photography: Priceless

Print Center Artist-in-Residence Linn Meyers designed the amazing artwork for the limited edition Tshirts we are selling at the SubZero festival on Friday, June 5.  They are HOT. Print Center Director Fanny Retsek picked them up yesterday and our excitement over them  led to an impromptu “Tshirt Catalogue Modeling” session with Fanny and Preparator Mike Oechsli. As the impromptu photographer, I’d like to describe the photographic style as somewhere between American Apparel and Eddie Bauer.

Our models are adorable and the Tshirt Design is totally mesmerizing. Pick one up next Friday June 5 at the SubZero festival while they last. Just $20. You will get an amazing Tshirt AND all of that cash goes right back to support the ICA Print Center and programs. Everybody wins!

    Rejected and Proud

We heart Notre Dame High School and are lucky to have such great neighbors! In fact, some of my favorite conversations here  have been with this creative, intelligent and curious group of young women.

So when art instructor Leslie Rice emailed images of her student’s recent work, I nearly  fell out of my office swivel chair with excitement.  Inspired by Arthur Gonzalez’ Rejection Letter Series (which are currently part of It’s Not Us It’s You at the ICA), Leslie tells me that she opened up the assignment to include homework, tests and class assignments. Check out these  funny, honest and smart works by students Morgan Huber Nadini Gupta and Denise Kelly.

Great work Morgan, Nadini and Denise. Many thanks to Leslie Rice for sharing  this with us.

    Ready to Roll!

ICA Print Center Director, Fanny Retsek and ICA Preparator, Mike Oechsli hunker down in the Print Center to take  stock for our upcoming printmaking workshop weekend extravaganza (Sat & Sun, May 30 & 31).

    Ready to Roll

    Ready to Roll

As you can see, there’s a lot of stock to take. Over 75 printmakers from Monterey to San Francisco participate in our two-day long monotype-making party. We’ll select the best of the best and show it all  in the 15th Annual Monotype Marathon Print Exhibition and Auction (MM),  July 1-18.  It’s our big summer fundraiser (please sponsor an artist!) and an even bigger summer art party (July 18th at the ICA), that you do not want to miss.  Check back here for more MM pics, updates and news.

And, here’s a shout-out to our incredible Print Center Partners who have supported us forever and ever:  Foothill College, Kala Art Institute, Monterey Peninsula College, Pacific Art League, San Jose State University, and the University of San Francisco.

And here’s a quick and easy monotype primer to keep you going. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monotype
